Brazilian Street Food in Los Angeles? Welcome to Squarefritz

Sometimes you forget there's other Latin cuisines besides Mexican in Los Angeles. And that is a shame.

Squarefritz  is helping to challenge the Mexican food status quo.

Located in the Pico- Union district Squarefritz is very much a family affair.  Owner Andre Lee has been wanting to bring the street flavors of his homeland to LA for a while now.

Pastels are the name of the game at Squarefritz. What are pastels? Think big artisan hot pockets.

Lee makes the pastels every morning from dough using a old family recipe. They range everywhere from a pizza version inspired by Pizza Hut ("we love Pizza Hut" Lee says) to the Especial de Feira which has ham. hard boiled egg, beef, tomatoes, and olives.

Despite being brand new and being in a tiny street mall outside Koreatown Squarefritz has been getting great reviews on social media.

It's not the streets of Brazil but Andre hopes it makes you feel a little bit closer.
