Triple 8 China Bar & Grill is the newest project from the guys who brought you Wokcano. On the outer rim of LA Live Triple 8 is taking Din Tai Fung head on with its menu of XLB's (soup dumplings) and other Hong Kong styled dishes. Its a beautiful space that fights the perception that the place to get Chinese food is from a strip mall. With the demand on Din Tai Fung (weekend waits can be over 2 hours) Triple 8 should be packed pretty soon.
So what should you try here? Well right now they have a pretty small menu while they develop specials and a dessert menu (I expect red bean and boiled peanut flavors maybe?) Personally the roasted duck was my favorite dish on the menu (some wraps and green onion or something would make this dish even better.) Dumpling wise I stick to the traditional pork soup dumplings though they do have a chicken option. They take a little time so ordering them before you decide on the rest of your menu is a good idea. You get two hours free at the LA Live parking lot so you can enjoy a nice meal. Email me if they get their dessert menu up.
